THE MORPH 6

Morning arrived and her eyes sprung open.  She lay there quiet,  as her eyes roamed around the room before getting out of bed.  He did not come, she thought.  He doesn’t care for me, she told herself.  But i Love him.  She tossed the blankets to the side and got out of bed.

He said he would try to make it down. He said,   if he wasn’t to busy, he would drive down. She left her bedroom, went to the kitchen and stopped thinking for seconds as she switched on the coffee pot and went to the bathroom. Why doesn’t he love me enough to see me.  Why.   She finished on the toilet and washed her hands and face, then brushed her long red hair. She stood looking at herself in the mirror, thinking some more, then told herself she would go out,  maybe drive into the city to see a movie, or just check out the dance clubs and have a drink or two.  Why should she sit around waiting for something that was never going to happen.  He would never be ready for her. After all he is quite fond of her . . .Quite fond of her,  not in Love with her.  She took one last look in the mirror, she saw the tears,  swell in her green eyes.  She  said out loud.  No . . .Don’t you cry. I am quite fond of things too and i do not love them.  He does not Love me . . .He uses me for  entertainment.  Why couldn’t i see this.  Why do i Love him.  Yeah? . . . Time for a change, they tell me change is good. She left the washroom and got dressed ready for the day.  She took her coffee and news paper to the table and waited for the bread in the toaster to pop.

How many times do you look at the clock in one day? This day was different. She looked at the clock about eighty times and still the time was not moving fast enough.Exhausted and confused at something making her watch the time, she went to the window and stood looking out across the field. Something was holding her.

She had her own business sewing and mending cloths. The building was situated at the cross roads,  on the corner at the highway. The phone rang and rang and rang more before she turned from the window, but by then it was too late and the ringing stopped.  Who ever is was she knew they would call back, chances are it was one of her customers, calling to see if their order was finished. Sometimes she would get big orders of three hundred shirts to be made a certain way or fashioned dresses,  that needed seven buttons,  or more sewn on them,  or like this time, she had an order for one thousand golf shirts with a black print across the neck collar.  She had sent everyone home for the day, saying the hours were long, that they did a good job and tomorrow they would meet the dead line.  She would stay behind and finish up paper work and sign paychecks for all eight workers.

It was now five o’clock and she was tired and getting hungry. She would clean up in her little washroom at the job site and drive into town where she would have a bit to eat and then drink and dance.  Something she has not done in years while she waited for him.  Nothing was going to stop her now . . .She would wait no more for any man. Her time was running out so she thought. She would soon be thirty and wanted a family and as far as she was concerned he wasted her last seven years and he would waste no more, she would move on and cut all ties from him. She looked at herself in the mirror.

When she left the washroom,  thunder could be heard off in the distance, black clouds raced a crossed the sky,  under white clouds that were already there. She was always afraid of thunder,  that is when the lightning would strike. She was always afraid.  Always, but not this time,  it was different,  and she knew it.  She could hear the thunder rolling in now for twenty minutes and did not care.  She tried hard to ask herself why?  why was she not afraid this time, there was no answer and the thunder was above the building now. She walked to the clock and stood there frozen watching the time. Then the phone rang . . .

The phone rang and the phone rang and the phone rang. Something snapped inside her and she went to answer it but it stopped ringing,  and she left the building getting in her car and drove to the city. She watched the road as she put her music on thinking she was going to have a good time and not think about him and spoil the night.  She would wait no more for any man.

Back in town from the other direction a car pulled into a lane way driving up to a darkened house.  Coming to a stop,  a man got out and opened the back seat door of the car,  taking out  a beautiful,  bundle of  flowers tied in red shiny ribbon. Then he reached into his pocket taking out  a little box covered in royal blue velvet, and opened it.  Inside was a  set of diamond rings. He looked towards the house then back to the rings.  I Love you more and more each day, and i don’t know,  but my heart tells me it’s you. He walked up to the house full of pride.

He arrived a day late but with every intentions of asking for her hand in marriage. He did love her.   There was trouble at the border causing great delays for everyone.   He found she was not home  so he placed the flowers in a vase leaving the box on the table with a note.

Then he left the house and drove to her work place,  in hopes she was there.  He parked the car and took his set of keys  and went into the building.  She was not there . . .He thought then that she may have went to  pick up some groceries and would be back soon. He noticed a picture on the shelf over by the coffee maker of him and her. He went to it taking it up. He smiled at the picture of her,  holding a huge fish she caught,  and the look on her face made him chuckle.  He remembered how she was getting crazy telling the person with the camera to hurry up and take the picture before she drops the fish, as it was jerking all over the place.  I should have asked you then to marry me, what a fool i am . . .He put the picture back and turned towards the noise he heard, but everything seemed quiet,  so he went back to looking at other pictures of them with fond memories.

Minutes later he stood and waited in  front of the clock.  He wanted to move but he could not move. He asked himself why. What was he doing, what was he waiting for? But there was no answer. He waited. The next thing he knew he went to the door,  opened it and just stood  listening to this sound. He stood frozen, compelled, transfixed to a luring noise, then took off his cloth.

He watched five beings ran towards him with bright red eyes and razor-sharp teeth. He could hear the scraping of their dragging claws getting louder as they came from across the field.  A clap of thunder broke opened the night and the scrapping stopped. He walked out and lay down among them as tears streamed down his face.  One of them opened his legs and he thought he was having sex. He could feel his organs tingle hot. Unable to move,  he watched the others watch and wait. They were waiting to feed on his sweet hot meat that lie before them.  Without this feed they would surely die. Blood was spilling out of his body, but he did not care. He watched as the others chew and ate him away then one of them the took his eyes.

That night when she returned home,  she seen the flowers and found the note with the little box. Upon opening the box she took in a surprising gasp of air. Then She read the note.

My Dearest Darling,

After carefull consideration i have come to the conclusion that i can not live another day without you . . .Will you marry me.

Oh she cried,  and ran to the bedroom,  where she thought he must be sleeping.  She would say yes. What she did was go visit with her sister and stay for supper. She could not bring herself to leave him after all . . .She was in Love.
